Taipa Stock & Saloon Racing

Club-based speedway history started in the Far North back in the mid 1980’s.  In the late 1980’s racing began on a track at this present site.  This would not have been possible without the full backing of the Poharama Family. With their help this start led to the formation of the Taipa Stock & Saloon Car Club.

In the early days the track was likened to ‘two straights joined by a hairpin at each end’, and the track simply followed the lay of the land. Throughout the 1990’s the track was developed to its current configuration, with the now famous ’red clay.’  This particular clay has tremendous firmness, grip, and drainage, which provides excellent traction for acceleration and cornering.....drivers call it ‘awesome drivability.’

There have been many memorable moments in the history of the club dating back to the mid eighties.  Life members of the club have very kindly allowed scans of early media releases for us to revisit.........and there are pics from recent years below.

It was captioned - ON A ROLL: Tess McMiken took the corner (just down from the commentary box of Schelle Thomas) in car No.33 at such speed the modified consequently rolled over.

AS RED AS HIS CAR: Pip Jecentho loses the back wheel on his Chevy Camaro causing the No.84 car to spin out of control and come to rest belly up.  Word has it that when pulled fom the car the recently turned bottle blonde's face was the same shade as his car's.

KYLE WEBSTER'S saloon is brought back on to the track with the aid of the club's tractor after the out of towner had driven over the bank in a heated race.

THE TOTARA TERROR TYRES got the best of Kelly Blair in his No.2 modified car - after taking a drive along the tyres he went for a roll over in race 16.
