LATEST RACE NEWS

Race Day 20 AprilMens Supers and Limiteds started the race action.  Bryan Armstrong and Geordie Inglis had a battle, with Armstrong winning two rounds.  Flynn Halliday, on only his second race meet, drove excellent races.  Mens C Grade driver, Matt Cameron, had three wins for the day after Scott Field retired with flat tyres.  Ladies C Grade driver, Kayne Tatnell, also recorded three wins.  Juniors 1 saw Hayley Fuller winning three.  In Juniors 2, handicapping led to close finishes.  Nathan Erihe, Eli Tatnell, and Chris Weal were nose to tail by the last lap each time, and good driving led to good finishes.  Each recorded a win.  Another new permanent entrant in Mens Standard Stockcars, Rob Anderson in car 89, from Palmerston North, came to play for the first time.  The local boys tried to take him out, but he evaded the traps and bangs to win the first two rounds.  Ryan Carey went up the bank twice and came close to rolling his no 87 stockcar.  He teetered, nearly rolled, and finally settled back down on all four wheels.  A reverse start race, where the stockcars all had to reverse around to the start line before turning to race, caused havoc and made things interesting for the spectators.

Race Day 18 MayRoy ‘Inchman’ Walker arrived for a skid and found the track in perfect condition for top performance.  Unfortunately he popped a header at the end of the second round and had to retire.  But he was ‘flying’ in the first two rounds!  Craig De Waal, in his son Daniels’ car, no 22, and Matt Cameron, no 15, had a real battle in Mens C Grade for three rounds, with Matt coming out with two wins to Craig’s one win.  Bruce Mallindine carried out three wins in Mens Production, over three rounds, against Vince Melrose and Grant Kidd.  The highlights of Bruce’s day were in Round One when he passed the B Grade saloon of Kelvin Coates, and he managed the same pass again in the ‘All-in’ for the win.  A Skyline beating a Chevy?  Unbelievable!  But it happened...twice!  Well done Bruce!  Kelvin Coates’ B Grade Saloon had some performance issues that Kelvin will be sorting before Queen’ Birthday.  Mens Standard Stockcars saw the great growing field of this season, with eight cars out for a mix up!  Roy Peel won two rounds and Rob Anderson won the third.  The stockcar field at Taipa is growing leaps and bounds!  Shades of the past!  Ladies Stockcars were the real highlight of the day.  Six ladies (can you call them that when they go out to annihilate each other?) drove three rounds for three wins for Rhonda Teixeira.  Rhonda was ecstatic with the results!  She has been waiting all season to do this!  It was great to see Julie Graydon out on the track again in no 555 stockcar.

Queens Birthday Weekend 31 May & 1 June – Taipa’s Annual Queen’s Birthday Speedway Extravaganza was once again an outstandingly successful event.  The whole race program of races was completed.  Ron Salter (Salter’s Waste Oil Collection, Auckland), thanked the Club for what he called ‘The Mecca of Speedway’.  Ron Salter had two of his Sprint cars in action at Taipa over the weekend.  Ron himself winning four races in No 63.  It was good to see so many ‘Wings’ at Taipa.  Winner of the Mens C Grade MacKenzie cup was Steve Hannon, car 31 from Kaikohe, second place went to Myles Greenwood, car 80 from Kaikohe, and third place went to Dave Cortesi, car 23 from Kaikohe.  The Demo Teams event was hotly contested between teams from Taipa, Hamilton, and Dargaville, with Taipa emerging the winners from the carnage of the final two race, much to the crowds delight.  But the ‘Dirty Rottens’ from Hamilton won the Teams Demo Cup for overall points for the weekend.  King of the Stocks Mens Stockcar race on the Sunday morning was won by car 168h, Billy Neill from Auckland.  Mens Stockcars overall points for the weekend went to Neville (Turtle) Haselton, car 55h from Huntly.  211 cars were raced in the races over the two days by 219 drivers.

Newsletter 10 APRIL 2008

Hello everyone

Congratulations to Craig De Waal and Roy Peel for their cup wins in the NBC Speedway Champs.  A big thank you to all our club members who came along to help with the fourth and final round at Taipa....Mere & Percy, Brian, Lyn, Rob, Merie, and everyone else who put in their efforts and time for this hugely successful day.  Thanks to Sue and Mel for supplying the pig.  Congratulations, also, to all winners of our Club Champs held 6 April.  Keith Wilson (91) drove spectacularly to win the Glyn Quilter Memorial Trophy for Mens Supers/Limiteds in the second round.  The next big event for all our drivers is the CTRA Champs at Kaikohe on 27 April.

COMMITTEE MEETING 8 APRIL

A couple of issues raised at this committee meeting should be noted by drivers:

  • All drivers and pit crews must be in racing gear or overalls, and must be wearing covered in shoes.
  • All dogs at the track, both in spectator and pits areas, must be physically held on a lead, and are not to be left unattended.
  • Scrutineering starts at 9.00am, and all cars should be at scrutineering prior to 12noon.

LATEST RACE NEWS

NBC Round Four Taipa 8 MarThe final placings after the four rounds showed seven of the eight trophies going to Kaikohe and Taipa members.  It was hard and fast racing to determine the final points and we wish to thank the events sponsors ITM Dargaville, ITM Whangarei, ITM Mangonui, and ITM Waipapa.

Race Day 9 Mar – All grades were well represented.  Many cars stayed to race the Sunday after NBC Round Four held on the Saturday.  Taipa Club cars also arrived to join in the fray.  Peg and Roy gave the spectators full on action out in the Mens Super/Limited field, and battled with Shane, Max, Geordie, and Bryan.  And as predicted, a large field of stockcars arrived for ‘hit and run’ action.  Marty Lorenz and Roy Peel played ‘tit’for tat’ for three rounds, much to the spectators enjoyment

Kaikohe Easter Stampede 22 & 23 Mar – Taipa cars were out in force at this meet.  Rangeview jalopy driver Willie Proffett appeared to get a little picked upon at this meet and rolled four times.  The event drew huge crowds on the Sunday to watch a record field of 21 cars duel it out in the Kaikohe demolition derby.  The winner of Taipa’s New Year demo derby, the ‘Fresian Bull’, competed again (thanks Craig) and was in the last half dozen cars moving...but it won’t compete again.

Taipa Club Champs 6 Apr – All grades were well represented and included new drivers.  Flynn Halliday arrived to race for his first time with his Limited Saloon (88); recently purchased from Bryan Armstrong, plus it was great to see two new junior drivers; Hayley Fuller and Janessa Henderson.  Womens Supers/Limited saw Shirley Andresen joined by Georgette (Geordie Inglis), and Flynnella (Flynn Halliday).  Shirley showed no mercy with the other ‘ladies’, earning herself the Ladies Super Trophy for the day.  Mens C Grade drivers, Craig De Waal and Matt Cameron each had a win. The third race was to be the decider and Matt got out ahead for the first few laps with Craig chasing hard.  Craig caught up and went for an inside pass on the bottom corner when the cars had a slight coming together that resulted in Matt rolling and coming to rest at the bank.

Wife: "There's trouble with the car. It has water in the carburetor."
Husband: "Water in the carburetor? That's ridiculous."
Wife: "I tell you the car has water in the carburetor."
Husband: "You don't even know what a carburetor is. Where's the car?"
Wife: "In the swimming pool."

Newsletter 28 FEBRUARY 2008

Hello everyone

Beadle-Taylor Photography

The standard stocks scene at Taipa is heating up for some great battles.  Numbers of stockcars has been growing this season and now we have a new young driver joining the action.  Ryan Carey, just 16 years old, has driven standard stocks a few times but now has his own car.  He will be driving standard stock 87P which has a Holden 253 engine (reduced crank to 240 – 4 litre).  This stockie is registered at Palmerston North and is sponsored by Hawkes bay Realty, and R & J Tilt Tray of Mackay, Australia.  Ryan will be racing against Mel Turner (1 Havoc) Rover 3.5 V8, Roy Peel (555) 4.0 EA Falcon, Matui Peel (55) sleeved Holden 253 V8, Cedric Tomas (‘the pig’ 19) 3.3 Vauxhall Cresta, Marty Lorenz (200) Rover 3.5 V8, John Hockenhull (79) Falcon 3.9, and Robbo Teixeira (11) Rover 3.5 V8 who hopes to have repairs finished and be back on the track real soon.

LATEST RACE NEWS

NBC Round Two Whangarei 2 FebThis meet was cancelled before the first round was completed due to a serious accident.  B Grade driver Erik Molving (car 25 Chevelle) rolled twice, and once the car came to rest on its side, it caught on fire.  Erik is still in hospital as this newsletter goes to print, undergoing skin grafts.

Race Day 3 Feb – Large fields of Mens Production, and Juniors were amongst the great turn out of cars.  It was good to see our 3 B Grade drivers all out racing, Brian O’Connell, Kelvin Coates, and Ivan Ballantine.  Hine Thompson and Sara Hockenhull had a coming together in the third race of Ladies Production, forcing Hine to retire to centrefield.  Matui Peel (stockie 555) won two of the three stockcar races but climbed the bank and teetered for a roll in the third.  Shay Carey (100) gave the spectators much hairy, bank touching, dust raising action before he won the third Mens Production race.

Kaikohe Club Champs 10 Feb

Some of our drivers entered the Club Champs at Kaikohe.  Shay Carey won race two in Mens Production and ended up third equal overall.  Carole Teixeira gained second in race two in Ladies Production and also raced Gary Miles’ C Grade car (19) in Ladies C Grade but it developed electrical problems after race one.

NBC Round Three Dargaville 16 Feb

Rain and slippery conditions preceeded delayed racing at Dargaville.  The first slippery round saw Cordell Armstrong (69), Bryan Armstrong (88), Chris White (95), Robyn Grieve (82), Stuart Hutton (43), Hine Thompson (49), Wendy Scott (50), and Roy Peel (555) all gain wins.  The second round was conducive to hard fast race action by the drivers; with Keith Wilson (91), Rex Roycroft (8D), Jesse Stoney (74), Didi Munchaster (8D), Ray Jordan (97), Craig De Waal (8T), and John Hockenhull (79) all recording wins.  The third round was then keenly contested with Mike Foster (34), Bruce Mallindine (49K), Stuart Hutton (43), Chloe Blacklock (124), Ray Jordan (97), Anita Sloot (4WR), Craig De Waal (8T), and Roy Peel (555T) all coming home first for great wins.

Kaikohe C Grade 10 Lap Dash 24 Feb

Craig De Waal, driving son Daniel’s car (22) won three of the four rounds to win the Kaikohe C Grade 10 lap dash.  Rex Roycroft won two of four rounds, and Bruce Mallindine won the other two, but Rex won the Mens Production Trophy for most over-all points.  Junior Daniel De Waal won all four of his races.  Carole Teixeira won race three in Ladies Production.

Newsletter 30 JANUARY 2008

Get ready for Club Champs – 2 March 2008!

30 January 2008

Hello everyone

Our New Year 2 day meet, 29 & 30 Dec, had great weather and great racing.  Super and Ltd Men gave us thrilling racing with Roy (Inchman) Walker putting on the best show on day one for the spectators.  He collided with Brian Armstrong’s car in a multicar pile up, then collided with Max Andresen doing damage to both cars.  Mens C grade boys played ‘rubbin is racin’ and we saw Craig De Waal, Matt Cameron, and Steve Peers swapping for the chequered flag over the weekend.  Spanhake Engineering sponsored day two was a day of good hard fast racing with the final race being the ITM Mangonui sponsored demo Derby.  Glen Keogh won a club donated Holden Commodore S/W and won the Demo Derby after being locked in final mortal combat with another competitor who popped their engine and started smoking.  Full results and photos of the 2 day meet, and all race meets, are available at:  www.freewebs.com/taipastockandsaloonracing

LATEST RACE NEWS

NBC Round One Kaikohe 5 JanCraig De Waal (8) had a 1st and two 2nds to be leading Mens C after round one.  Roy Peel (555) had two 1sts and a 2nd to be leading stockcars after round one.  Hine Thompson (49k) is leading Ladies Production with three 1sts.  The next round is at Whangarei on 2 February.  We wish them all good racing.

NZ Saloon Car Champs Waikaraka 12 Jan – Roy Walker had a 1st and an 8th in his first two qualifying heats, but in heat three he was driven into the infield after being tangled with a Bay Park car.  This resulted in a flat tyre that he couldn’t race on.  He raced in the repercharge race, where only one car could qualify, but couldn’t get up to 1st place.  Roy is entering NI Saloons Champs at Huntly (Feb 15 &16)

Race Day 13 Jan – Visiting cars and drivers joined us for excellent racing.  Keith Wilson and Max Andresen were going hard out in their Supers against Brian Armstrong’s Ltd.  Alyssa McPhail from Waiheke got out of shape and climbed the bank past the commentator’s box in Amber O’Connell’s Production Torana.  She came to rest on her side.  New Ladies C driver, Kayne Tatnell, and Raewyn Melrose (in nephew Daniel De Waal’s car 22) drove excellent races.  The ‘all-in’ field for the last race saw over 20 cars on the track.  Production drivers Tony

Taylor, George Price, Bruce Mallindine, and Grant Kidd all pushed hard to get past one another.  This all came to an end for Grant when he lost his back axle.  The wheel went flying over Tony Taylor, and was last seen disappearing into the swamp over the bank.

Dargaville Anniversary Weekend 26 & 27 Jan – Cars from Taipa, Kaikohe, Whangarei, Auckland, Huntly, and Rangeview all gathered to join Dargaville cars for two days of fine weather and plenty of racing action.  Lynn Yates (11a) rolled her Limited Saloon in her first race.  Cordell Armstrong and Ray Jordan’s Supers had a coming together that resulted in Ray’s car being trailered.  C Mens contested the 12 lap PK Contracting Trophy on day two.  Jaeden Cross (20wr) drove well for 3rd, Aaron Hodgson (9d) came 2nd and Azza Johnstone (23d) held out in the lead for 1st and the trophy.  Production Men contested the 12 lap Dargaville Honda Trophy.  Alex Harvey (5d) came 1st, Dion Inrvine (7) followed for 2nd, and the action for 3rd saw Bruce Mallindine (49k) just ousted by Robin Crewe (82wr).  A must meet for next year.  Ministock action.......

Latest Race News

At our race meet, on the 16th December, the bank between the commentator’s box and starter’s box seemed to have a magnetic attraction for more than one driver. (Chris Weal found this spot attractive at the meet before when he ran up this bank and tipped his Escort on its side.) No 19 stockcar demonstrated how to use his stockcar as a front end loader, and No 15 C Grade Matt Cameron also rode the wall after a touch from No 777 men’s production, Grant Kidd.  Good to see the Peel family back with a new all black No 555 stockie, and Kelvin Coates in No 46 B Grade with the new wings and tyres.

Craig De Waal No 8 C Grade won the ‘all in.’
