1st 8 Craig De Waal

At our race meet on the 16th December the bank between the commentators box and starter’s box seemed to have a magnetic attraction for more than one driver. (Chris Weal found this spot attractive at the meet before when he ran up this bank and tipped his Escort on its side.) No 19 stockcar demonstrated how to use his car as a front end loader, and No 15 C Grade Matt Cameron also rode the wall after a touch from No 777 men’s production Grant Kidd.  Good to see the Peel family back with a new all black No 555 stockie, and Kelvin Coates in No 46 B Grade with the new wings and tyres.

Taipa track had a great field of junior racers on Sunday 25 November 2007.  It was Taipa Stock and Saloon Car Club’s ‘time trial’ meeting for 2007.  The big field of Junior racers showed their expertise and gave it their all.  Daniel de Waal was the fastest over the one lap time trial.  His time was 18.17 secs for the lap.  Congratulations to Daniel for that great driving effort.

No 77 Chris Weal pushed his Ford Escort car to the limit in Round two and touched the bank during the race and ended up rolling on his side.  The safety features in the car ensured that Chris and his passenger were not hurt and they were back out to race in the next round.

Brian Armstrong recorded the fastest one lap time trial time for the day in his LTD of 15.88 seconds. The second fastest time trial lap was recorded by Bruce Mallendine in his R32 Skyline at 16.78 seconds.

The Stockcar field gave the spectators a bit of biff and bash and Marty Lorenz proved the strongest on the day even though he had clutch problems.

Taipa track is situated about I kilometer up Oruru Road, by the river on the northern side of the Taipa bridge.

The Peria School Fundraising Committee are providing great hot food on site for Taipa Stock and Saloon Club’s race meetings this season.  Their great fresh hamburgers are proving very popular each meeting with hot chips and cold drinks .It is a great day out for families.  Come along and support their effort for Peria School. They are also providing their delicacies for the drivers prize giving after the meet in the pits and spectators are always welcome to join in.  Come and meet the drivers.  They are only too happy to talk to you about your prospective race car.

A passenger seat ride is always available for enthusiastic would be new drivers to see if they really want to join in the thrilling racing.  Most new drivers start in the Junior or C grade sections.  Around $500 gets a new junior or new senior C grade car on the track for the season.  Plus around $25 per meet for petrol.  The only other thing to think about is a car transport trailer or ‘A-frame’ with light bar.

This is a safe inexpensive sport that teaches young drivers how to accelerate safely in adverse conditions (slippery clay), how to brake safely in adverse conditions (slippery clay and car stopping in front), and how to evade a situation happening in front of them safely.  They learn to watch for trackside flag signals and learn a lot from dirt track racing peers for safe driving habits that will keep them in good stead for road driving in the future.

Next race day is Sunday 16 December with racing starting at 1pm.Taipa’s annual New Year meeting will be held over two days (Sat/Sun) on the 29th and 30th December.  The last race on Sunday 30th is a demolition derby.  Anyone can enter a car in the demolition derby so if you have a car on the lawn that is still going, even though it no longer has a WOF or Registration, you are welcome to enter.  Please contact the club secretary, Lyn Mitchell, 09 4085993, 854 Oruru Road, RD2, Kaitaia, for entry forms and rules.
